History

Agiasos has a long history, with its roots traced back to the Byzantine era. The village’s development is closely tied to the foundation of the Church of Panagia of Agiasos, a significant pilgrimage site. The name “Agiasos” is derived from the Greek phrase “Agia Sion” (Holy Zion), which was inscribed on a Byzantine icon believed to have been brought to the area in the 9th century AD.

Throughout the years of Ottoman rule, Agiasos served as a center of Greek culture and Orthodox faith. Its inhabitants were known for their resilience and their strong connection to their traditions, which are still very much alive today.
